American modernist painting
Raymond Jonson
Raymond (Carl Raymond) Jonson, (1891-1982), was the grand master modern artist in the American Southwest. Jonson was born in Iowa, raised in Portland, OR, and lived in Chicago briefly, but it was the American Southwest that captured the soul of Raymond Jonson and kept him there for the remainder of his life. Jonson was greatly influenced by two Russian artist: Wassily Kandinsky and Nicolas Roerich. Kandinsky’s works at the 1913 Armory show had a profound effect, and Roerich’s inclinations toward spirituality and art was influential in Jonson’s co-founding the Transcendental Painting Group.
