1940s modernist painting
Exceptional modernist painting by British/American modernist Madge Knight.
Madge Knight (United Kingdom/California/Italy 1895-1974) was a British modernist artist who married American modernist Charles Boardman Howard in the 1930s. Charles Howard was a member of the influential avant-garde family of Howards that left a lasting impression on the San Francisco Bay Area. The two modernist, Charles and Madge lived in London until the advent of WWII, inn 1940 the two moved to the US, staying in the San Francisco Bay area, studying and sharing ideas with the Howard family and the rest of the bay area’s progressives. After the war Madge and Charles returned to Europe, but continued to travel frequently between the US and Europe, sharing ideas and approaches to modern art in both regions.
