SH Raza (Syed Haider Raza)
Hindi (Day Chant Melody)’ 1962
The Modern Art Exchange is proud to offer for sale ‘Day Raga – Hindi (Day Chant Melody)’ , a rich and robust painting by India’s most esteemed modern artist, Syed Haider Raza.
Syed Haider Raza was born in 1922 in Madhya Pradesh, India, the son of a forest ranger. As a young man he studied at the Nagpur School of Art and the Sir J.J. School of Art.
In the 1940’s Raza became a founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group, (PAG), based in Bombay. Raza, along with K.H. Ara and F.N. Souza worked to break free from the influences of European realism and develop a modernist art language to bring an Indian inner vision (Antar gyan) into their art.
After receiving a French Government scholarship in 1950 Raza traveled to Paris to study at the École nationale des beaux-arts. Mr. Raza was awarded the Prix de la critique in Paris in 1956, becoming the first non-French artist to receive this honor.
While in France, Raza continued to experiment with Western abstraction while incorporating elements from his home country of India, including Tantrism from Indian scriptures.
In 1959, he married French artist, Janine Mongillat, and three years later, in 1962, he traveled to the United States of America and became a visiting lecturer at the University of California in Berkeley, USA.
‘Day Raga, Hindi (Day Chant Melody)’ is exemplary example of Syed Raza’s abstract expressionist work, created while Raza was living and teaching in Berkeley, CA.
This painting comes from the collection of a well known Berkeley architect and art collector, who originally purchased the work from the Lanyon Gallery in Palo Alto, CA in 1962.
‘Day Raga’ clearly shows the strong connections Raza had to his home country of India, and it’s people, and it’s culture, as he traveled abroad.
Throughout his life Syed Raza has participated in numerous exhibitions garnishing numerous accolades. Exhibitions including the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1958, the Biennale de Menton, in France in 1966, 1968 and in 1978, and Contemporary Indian Painting at the Royal Academy in London in 1982. He was conferred the Padma Shree Award by the President of India in 1981, and the Padma Bhushan in 2007. Raza now lives and works in Delhi.
Syed Raza is recognized as one of the most influential modern artist from India, and certainly the most sought after with his paintings fetching well over $3 million US in auctions.
